  • Mallows Bay 7/19/14

Went to Mallows early this morning. Snakehead were making big splashes, but weren't interested in any of my frog lures.

Here are a couple pics of some of my catches. Both were caught on an ultralight rod/reel with a beetle spinner with soft crappie lure. However, the catfish did some damage to the lure - it bent the hook and the spinner hardware. I had a monster of a fish on the ultralight that I lost before I could see it - I have a feeling it was another catfish.

I was trying out the ultralight setup, forgetting about the catfish at Mallows Bay. Regardless, it was fun catching a catfish on an ultralight!

    Laura,

    Good job.

I think you've become an ultra-light catfish specialist.

Congrats on your catfish catch! Last time I saw you you said you had never caught one and wanted to catch one, so good for ya!

Fished Mallows Bay yesterday too. My first time there-a beautiful location! Launched my SIK at 8 am and threw frogs and worms but no bass bites (I'm new at the bass fishing game). I did catch several catfish on a bottom rig using chicken breast chunks.

Nice catfish! Don't think I saw you there as I don't remember seeing a red kayak.

Nice going Laura. Those catfish are a handful on ultralight and light tackle.

All fish with a forked tail are stronger than fish with a paddle tail. I caught a 10lbs cat on my ultralight rod with 4lbs test a while back, that was a fun fight...and a tasty meal.

My brother (in a blue SIK) and I stayed out towards the river wrecks. We didn't get back into the tributary area to the right of the ramps--I'll do that next time.
