seems the feds have been watching the charter boys in Va for going past the 3 mile limit and harvesting rock fish. heard they have been investigated for 3 years and have recently confiscated many charter boat electronics to be studied. about time!

Excellent news! I knew of a co-worker who said that he went on a VA Beach Charter and they had to run all the way down to NC to catch fish. On the second day of fishing it was so slow that the Captain trolled pass the 3 mile limit to catch his fish. He was communicating with other captains who were doing the same thing and they were all watching out for the police......

So bogus! The impact on spawning stock must be huge. These guys are cutting their nose to spite their face!! If they are violating the law they must face the consequences. The problem is most of those consequences are minimal. They need to have some teeth so violators really feel it!

i dont think that the stock is depleated that much, thet are just out past the 3 mile limit set by the feds and these a$$ holes dont care where they go to get them. i guess the feds are going to go through thier gps and find where they were fishing

Fishing beyond 3 miles kind of a gray area. targeting stripers beyond 3 miles is illegal but fishing out past 3 miles is not. So checking thier electronics will just show where they were. Not what they were targeting or catching.

We have been stopped be the coast guard a couple of times over the years out beyond 3 miles. They board the boat do a quick inspection, check for any illegal fish and go on their way. The first time we were trolling for Blues and albies off Ocean city in August and the second time were were flounder fishing around a wreck. So they are checking but it's a big Ocean

I did have a friend who was catching stripers inside of the 3 mile limit (in the OC inlet) limit out then he decided to run out to a wreck and do some tog fishing well the coasties stopped him gave him a ticket with a court date and confiscated his stripers even though they were caught inside of the 3 mile limit. Since the costies said he was now outside of it and that made the catch illegal. He did win the court battle as the Gps cordinates the coasties recorded on the citation is inside of the 3 mile limit.

It's the same way on the susky flats or any where else in the upper end of the bay when the Striper Season or the C & R season is closed, targeting stripers is Illegal. But you can fish for perch, catfish and Lg and smallmouth bass or any other type of fish that might be here.
