my roof racks are modified trunk mount bike carriers
get the carriers from second hand stores for under$10
Leasves enough room for rods or 4" conduit rod case

Check this rig out. Room for two hobies and rod storage. Memory Maker could have dreamed this one up, Mr. Hobie.

          Drainage Pipe

I have a Yakima rack on my PU to haul the yak. Carrying one piece rods without damage was an issue. I went to Home Depot and picked up a piece of drainage/irrigation tile (a lightweight PVC tube) and two endcaps. I lash the tube to the Yakima rack. I used a couple of bolts with wingnute to hold the endcaps on. I put the rods inside rod socks and then tie the butt ends together. I drove all the way from MD to Wisconsin and back without a problem. Works like a charm.
