I found this explaination of exactly what you were talking about. I believe this was done when Bass Pro spooled my line. It is not what I would consider backing since it is only 15 to 20 yards. If a fish gets to this line it is already gone.

This is different than the original question of filling half of your spool with cheap mono before adding the braided line to save cost.

fished the surf this spring with a buddy, i had my spinners and he was using conventional reels, he lost consentration on a cast and the nest was unbelieveable. had to cut out all the special line and luckily he had spare spools to re-spool with.
picked up a couple casters last winter and practiced casting, i think i keep my spinners.

        Million yards of braid

[QUOTE=Patrick13116;2905]I use bait casting reels exclusively for fishing with lures or live bait. I have never thought of using a mono backing. I have both of mine spooled with about a million yards of the braided line,[QUOTE]

A MILLION YARDS! HOW LARGE ARE THOSE REELS?

Haha I thought the same thing! I pretty only get those 150 yd powerpro spools and if it's a big reel it gets the whole thing, if it's a smaller reel, I'll spread it across two or three reels.

If you guys end up with any extra braid, it has some great uses... nail knot a stinger hook, tube fly, put it on a lighter rod for flounder jigging (you'd only need the water you're fishing plus a little extra, no more than 40 feet probably), fluke + hopkins jigging set up eg http://corefishingtackle.com/CoreJigHeads.html ... among other uses

John - you never said what you thought of your new rig, how goes it?

It's ready, feels good but haven't used it yet! And won't until the M&G!! August was filled with family visits, a road trip to NJ for another family event and deck re-construction.

This weekend I have fly fishing for smallies on the brain. Gonna hit Riverbend at dawn tomorrow. Sunday, me and the missus heading to Shenandoah River State Park for 3 nights of camping. Taking the kayaks too!

Sounds like a blast! I haven't been fishing either, but I did sneak a charter in there last week. I'm hoping to get out some this weekend depending on the hurricane.

Good luck with the smallies! I've always had a lot of success on the hokie clouser (maroon and orange) and the brown and orange pattern. That was on the new where there is a very healthy population of crayfish. Olive woolly buggers and black are also good imitators.

I'm thinking of swinging mine at the bridge, we'll see.

Thanks for the tips, Michael. I have some of those Hokie clousers. I also picked some good looking crayfish imitations I'm excited to try.

I also thought about the bridge but decided on Riverbend. I found another spot to hit the river further up so will not have to wait for the park to open. Just planning 2 hours maybe 6-8am. If you're interested to join me I'm happy for the company. Open invite to anyone else interested...

Tomorrow morning. Saturday, the 4th... I really haven't been out since the last M&G. Now, with the temps starting to cool I'm stoked!

How'd you do at the river? (I think you're out camping/fishing now)

Did OK. Wasn't as focused as I might have liked since the missus doesn't fish. Full report in the Boatyard section.

Speaking of smallmouth bass, I spotted a report about Riverbend Park. Looks like the cooling temps has got them on the feed. Gotta try there with the kayaks...

Worked great. Didn't cast it, though. Mostly bouncing bucktails and a bit of trolling. I liked the feel and will practice casting...

Lemme know when you're back. Rack, sticker and smallmouth!

                              Done, Done, and Done.

I might have a change of plans on the quarry though, I'll let you know. I'll be back on Sunday but I think I won't get the pass till Tuesday.
