            We used to do something similar to the above with a modified sewing machine. You could control the speed, etc and it worked great for laying the thread for the eyes anyway. I was younger so don't have all the details, but my dad and I put it together and built many rods, I still have and use several of them. I'm sure if someone has an old sewing machine it can be done.

              Back in the day we built dozens of custom rods using similar setup with a Singer variable speed sewing machine motor with the foot pedal control... but time and effort cancelled out any real savings as manufacturers stepped up their quality- and the costs of blanks and components rose- factoring in minimum wage for my time, I could buy a comparable rod for about the same as my costs to build one...great hobby but I had too many hobbies
