  • Specks and a Bluefish

A already posted this on the main forum.
I am re-posting it on the VA forum to keep the VA record in the VA forum.

Again the thunderstorm forecast and the thunderstorms early in the morning while driving to Chic’s Beach forced me to give up CBBT (Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel).

I went to my backup water, Rudee, VA. I thought big specks are in full force already. But soon I found and heard that specks were scarce for few days.

It was one of the worst catching days in Rudee. I wasn’t successful in the shallow water. When I explored the deep water, on the fish finder, I saw some nice size fish in 15 down in 20-30’ of water. So I used ½ OZ jig heads to lower my lures. After I picked a 20” speck and a bluefish. I couldn’t find them again in the same deep water.

I trolled and cast MirrOlure (52MR21) in the shallow water. 3 nice size fish got away when reeling in. I landed 2 more specks at 19” and 20”.

    Fishing Log:

    Thanks
    Joe

Looks like you found a couple quality specks!

P.S. I hope you didn't get in REC's way, haha!

      Bob,
What will be your plan? I am not quite sure about my next fishing spot based on the current water temp.

      Current Water Temp:
DE Bay (CHSP 62F, Cape May 60F) -- Will be OK this weekend for togging
Indian River Inlet area (64 F)
      OC Inlet (64 F)
Kipto (60 F) -- If the water temp stays at around 60-63 F for next few days, the first anglers will get keepers.
CBBT (67 F) -- Possible Togs and few puppy drums
Rudee -- backup, but it will be good for specks

I want cold front moves in for few days.
      Joe

I don't know? You fish everywhere for them; I pretty much tog fish in OC 90% of the time. But I live 10 minutes away, so it makes my decision easy.

I see that the bite is picking up in OC, but the throwback to keeper ratio is still high with some days being better than others for bringing home a few for dinner.

I killed 2 hours between work shifts togging from land last Thursday in Chincoteague. It was slow at slack current (toads!), but once the current got going tog started to bite fast. I got 11 with 1 keeper and lost another that felt like a keeper before the bite slowed just as quickly as the sun went down. I used small Asian rock crabs and blue crab.

I think you'd be able to find a keeper at any of them.

Nice specs. I think I am going to try to get some Togs at Cape Henlopen this weekend.
