  • Reasonably priced jigging rod

    Hi,

Does anyone have a suggestion for a reasonably priced jigging rod? By reasonably priced, I mean $60 or under?

    Thanks!

Spinning or casting? I have been known to be a gear junkie and I can probably give you some decent suggestions.

I have been kayak/boat jigging for a number of years and for spinning rods I settled on a 6'6" MH spinning rod that is 100% graphite. You can get by with a medium rod and it is definitely more fun, but the MH is to me a better start. Composite blanks that have some fiberglass in them are more durable but you sacrifice a lot of sensitivity. If you're new to jigging then I'd say find the most minimal handle you can to increase your feel. Once you get a good grasp (pun intended) on the tick of a striper bite then you can move on to full cork handles or even EVA and still be able to feel the bite. Below are some options -

        1) The old BPS Graphite series used to be a great bang for your buck rod but they have diminished in quality and durability with the last 2 or 3 revisions. If you can find an old one that is black with regular white writing that is the best one. On sale you could get them for as cheap as $15. The new one - http://www.basspro.com/shop/en/bass-...-rod-2232747-1 is $40 and may still be a decent option.

        2) Berkley Lightening (http://www.basspro.com/shop/en/berkl...s-spinning-rod) are pretty sensitive but can be known to be a bit brittle. Watch the high stick with this one. The handle seems exposed but it's actually a tube inside the grip so you're not touching actual blank. It's still very sensitive especially compared to eva (foam) or some of the softer cork handles.

        3) Penn Squadron / Allegiance Rods (https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p...sqdrn10177frod) these are a little soft in the tip and don't make a very sensitive jigging rod, however, they do make a great all around trolling / casting rod and they are in your price range.

        4) Abu Vengance/Vendetta/Other tough sounding names - these have come a long way and are pretty sensitive. Make sure you go to the store and shake a few as you want one that feels crisp vs soft and sloppy. https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p...ngnc6ft6nmrodx Like the lightening rod already mentioned, these can be a little brittle so watch the high stick.

        5) Duckett (Carrot Stick..) https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p...ghst6ft9mdhrod - these are super sensitive and also can be quite delicate. The new duckett versions seemed to have figured out how to balance some fiberglass in there without reducing sensitivity but make sure you get the 6'9" MH version as the longer ones are softer in the tip.

        6) St Croix Triumph - Cork handle and heavier than nicer st croixs but definitely still a great stick. I think St Croix under rates their rod ratings so if you go with this one or the premier then get the medium power version as it will be more foregiving on your wrist. The MH is fine too and I have one that I use as my "heavy jigging" rod which mostly means late fall/winter/spring when we have to bump up jig weight to 1.5oz+. The Mojo Bass is also a good option and made on the same blank as the premier, just in purple color.

Ok that's a few options. Other brands to look at are Star (most of their rods are now 7ft it seems), Daiwa, Bass Pro Johnny Morris or Extreme, Cabelas. Whatever you do, buy it in the store and go and shake some sticks. If you don't know what you're looking for then check out Kimbro's http://www.chesapeakelighttackle.com...the-right-rod/ as he did a good job putting information together.
