  • Shrimp Tying

Figured I would start tying up some grass shrimp for this summers white perch. I went and looked at a bunch of pictures and came up with these. I think I will end up getting some mono thread and the uv epoxy to end up with a more transparent shrimp but for now I was playing to see what colors and materials I liked.

They will be lethal for white perch. Very nice.

I could use a couple dozen of those with barbell heads on the Susquehanna.

        Excellent!

That's similar to a shrimp pattern guide Neil Taylor showed me in Tampa last week.

        1. Long shanked hook -- like a Mustad 9672
        2. Plastic bead eyes on the bend.
        3. Pearl Estaz body
        4. A thin layer white bucktail and crystal flash on top of the shank extending slightly over the eye and longer over the bend.

Neil gave it to me to copy but I lost it!

However it was so simple, I'll remember it and make some when I start perch fishing this year.

        Good luck with yours.

Fly tying is an addictive habit that is not quite as expensive as other drugs.
So is fishing for that matter!

I picked up some mono thread to try and make some that look more translucent. Wanted to get some uv stuff but it's a little expensive.

I think I like fly tying more than fly fishing...

IMG_0299.jpgFor the eyes you can use mono and heat up ends to form black eyes.

Here's my first attempt at a knock-off version of the shrimp fly I mentioned earlier in this thread. I saw it during a recent trip to FL.

                          P1020715.jpg

It's not as elaborate or as realistic as Brian's but I like its simplicity. It takes no more than 3 or 4 minutes to tie.

Hook is Mustad 9672, size 4.

                          Body is pearl Estaz.

Eyes are mini lead eyes but you could use plastic or burnt mono.

Wing is combination of bucktail and Flashabou.

I'm sure white perch will hit it.

That is definitely a much simpler version.
Just realized I forgot eyes on the one today. I got eager to tie.
