  • Mid-Potomac Snakeheads and Bass 4/21

Dropped my son off at daycare and was on my way to the launch spot of the day when Mike (Chex) sent me a pic of the first snake of the day not 30 minutes after launch, caught on a chatterbait!

Finally, made it to launch around 10am and of course my first fish of the day was a dink striper! Fished around docks and lay-downs for the next hour or so without a sniff and decided to try to catch some bluegills for cat bait. About 20 minutes into the cat bait search, something large started taking off with my nightcrawler!

After short tussle, I had a 24" snakehead in the net!

I continued fishing the worms and casting lures for a few more hours, seeing several more snakeheads that were not interested in anything I threw at them... Picked up a baby bass on a squarebill crank bait and later began flipping a small jig with a gulp alive trailer. I made a perfect pitch right next to a submerged log and my line started to move off. So, I set the hook hard into what ended up a nice 3+lb largy.

Didn't catch a lot, but made up for it with quality fish!

Great report! I've done well with chatter baits for snakeheads and largemouths on the Tidal Potomac. Cats like them too.

Every single snake I've caught up until this one has been on a chatterbait.

Chatterbait is pretty versatile- but 90% of my snakeheads have been on Real Target brown and green frogs...and I have caught them on firetiger squarebill crankbait and one on a orginal Rapala that was floating while I was cleaning a blacklash...

You mean something like this guy HlmwuTE[1].jpg? My success is all over the map with snakeheads, keep trying different things and not having luck with any two things on any two days. We come from far away, always looking for new options with limited time.

Yep- that's the bait and you can't be afraid to throw it in the thick stuff...

I really want to target and catch some snakeheads this year. I hear people talk about them and how good they are to eat; makes my mouth water every time. If someone decides to do a weekend excursion for the sake of snakeheads let me know!

I'm in the same boat, busy this weekend. But maybe in the next couple if your schedule works.

We're coming from far away the 17-21 to the general mattawoman area, going to the snakehead event @ Blackwater that Sunday as well. We can't reliably catch them (at all, lol, 2 in 4 trips!) but we should do well on other species. I just upgraded to a Pursuit and hoping to really slam it up in the thick stuff. Anyone's welcome, especially if you have a clue what you're doing! Lol! Here's our tentative spots to scope and consider. TRfe5Ni[1].jpg
