  • New to fly tying

I got the itch to try tying flies.
Went over to Bass Pro and talked to Harry (On the fly) and got a quick lesson and some supplies.
Got home and tied my first Clouser style fly with my 4 year olds help.

First lesson learned, leave more room forward of the weight.

Second lesson, use less buck tail hair.

All in all it was fun and I can't wait to try to do more.
I think I am going to try tying 10 or 15 circle hooks for my hard baits next. That should give me some quick practice without being to worried about a fly design.
    Thanks again Harry

Looks good. I don't know what I'm doing either, but it's lots of fun.

That is a good start. Fly tying is a good cold weather activity.

There are a lot of instructions and recipes on the internet. Also check Youtube for recipes, tricks and tips..

Nice job! I see your tying buddy had his hand on the fly. Stop by anytime I am there if you are having problems and we can work them out. If you guys want on the every other Sunday I work from 1-3 we can do some fly tying at bass pro. Will set up table and we can tie, maybe that will help.

            Brian,

Nice to break them in young.

When I started tying my kids were teenagers and they thought it was very uncool for dad to be playing with thread and bobbins.

            Continued success to you.

Fly tying and fly fishing are very addictive.
Your flies look great for your first attempts. They will catch fish!

A quick hint about tying Clousers, tie down the wing and beard behind the dumbbell eyes as well as in front of the dumbbells. This will keep the hair from flaring out as much and make the fly more durable.

Also with Clousers, less is more.
They don't have to be heavily dressed.
