  • Sharky sharky

It is time for red drum on the ESVA. The big bulls are barely within kayak range and I just started targeting them on Friday. I saw some caught, but as luck would have it, I could not get past the sharks. I easily caught 20 with a few 4 footers thrown in there. Below is a video that shows you how big much of a pain they can be. They are fast and unpredictable, but its all part of paying the price to land a bull red, but man I hate those things.

Yep- small frisky sharks are a PIA, but the big ones are even more so- they can strip your reel clean unless you follow them, get fairly close and break them off- I sometimes switch up baits to try to avoid them using live crabs, but even then I have caught sharks on crabs...

I totally agree. Most of the time, I cut them off. A $1.50 hook isn't worth a trip to the ER or losing a finger. It is a pain for sure, but I just accept it as part of the fall red drum fishery. The same with the spring/summer cobia fishery. There aren't too many way around sharks and rays. Chalk it up to paying the dues.

Ah man, he tried to take a souvenir back down with him! That would of really ruined the night had you not had the rod leased!

I'd rather deal with a big shark than those small buggers. They flail too much and can practically bite their own tail.

I hear ya. When SlobberBob and I were cobia fishing I ran across a 6-7 footer right up against the sod bank. He swan right under me in about 4 FOW. That was the biggest Ive seen in the bay and def. got the adrenaline pumping for a second.

Lol, that's great. And you're right. I think I would have gone in the water if he landed in my lap.

While we are here talking about sharks.. in this case a black tip it looks like. My buddy just sent me a picture of some idiot that caught one at the inlet at ocean city.. about 5 ft long.. he gaffed it. I wish I would've been there this dude would of never heard the end of it. Im surprised DNR wasnt around.

I think that's just a little sandbar shark. There's a bajillion of them around that size down where he was fishing.

Yup. It was a sandbar. I've only ever caught one small black tip on the shore.
