  • ActionHat Gear Review for Kayak-Fishing Video

I tested ActionHat (for mounting GoPro camera). Matt Baden suggested me that a hat might be an alternative for a helmet for kayak-fishing video thru one of VA threads. Also Scrumptrelecent mentioned that he is using it. And it looked some of our members are interested in ActionHat for kayak-fishing video. So I bought the ActionHat.
Last Sunday, I conducted testing in Lake Anna where the water was warmer and catching stripers was guaranteed.

It was a cloudy day with occasional snow flurries:
    • Air Temp: 30-40F
    • Wind: 5-10 MPH
    • Water Temp: 53 F

I leash the hat all the time except during the ActionHat floating tests. I hope the review help some of our members.

    Contents of the video:
    • Testing day conditions in Lake Anna
    • Why a Helmet/Hat mounted GoPro when kayaking?
    • Comfort level/Weight balance when GoPro is mounted on forehead)
    • ActionHat Floating Test (while sitting on a kayak)
    • ActionHat Floating Test (self-rescue)
    • Recommendations to Manufacturer
    • Conclusion (I gave 4 stars out of 5)

    The review:

Good write up Joe. I don't have the same issue with the camera slipping on the mount that comes with the actionhat. Good idea about the leash. I don't fish rough waters very often but it would be a good insurance policy if you turtle.

        Scrumptrelecent,

        Thank you.
I re-loaded the youtube video after making a correction..
I duplicate the adapter issue. I put water on the adapter. Water made it loose. But the real flaw in my test was I didn't tighten the knob firmly because I was afraid of stripping plastic thread on the ActionHat adapter. Then I found that the thread part is made of stainless steel. Thanks for correcting my error in the test

Nice video Joe! Not sure how the back of the hat is like but I usually utilize the velcro on my baseball cap to leash it. The velcro on mine is pretty tough and doesn't come off easy. I tie a large knot at the end of the leash and open the velcro half way place the leash with the knot above and close the velcro. Stays in place. But the action hat may be too heavy to do that... Just a thought

              Mustafa,
I am working most of the weekends including Friday for a while. So I am taking comp day off on wed or Thu for a while. I will let you know when I don't work on weekends to get together for Lake Anna fishing.
The baitfish (shad) are still mid/upper lake because we had warm weather. I am going to fish down lake tomorrow (dike 3). I will know tomorrow if shad and stripers moved to the down lake.

Stripers hadn't been in the down lake yet.
