Sparky and I hit the flats looking for some nice fish. We fished the daybreak hours looking for top water without any takers.
We headed for deeper water and eventually found a school of fish, small ones with some keepers mixed in. We had some fun for sure.
There was a flathead in there too. When we found the school it was impossible to keep fish off the hook. We left 'em biting because he had to get back by noon, which turned into 1 :-)

I felt like I spent a lot of time shaking my head at boaters. They would fly right past us. One guy zoomed right between Jeremy and I and another looked to be at full speed coming within 10' of Jeremy.
I think a lot of boaters have something wrong with their heads.

    Nice catches.

Regarding top water, were you casting or trolling? What top water lures were you using?

What baits worked for you and how deep was the water where you caught them?

    Thank you,

Good job on locating the fish. The flats is always a challenge for me to find the fish.

Always nice to search and find biting fish.

Yeah, there are some inconsiderate boaters with an attitude out there. On the other hand, there are many considerate ones. That's why I try to say hello or nod my head to them when we pass each other. I even give them leftover bait (like crab or live minnows), and they appreciate it. I gave live minnows to pier fisherman too. You know, strike up a chat and establish a good relationship with them.

For top water, we were throwing poppers around grass lines. I was throwing a smack it jr.

We put in some serious mileage! Not sure what was up with the boats, it felt deliberate for sure. That's not uncommon for the flats unfortunately. Maybe it's time to get some glitter for the kayaks and paddle like idiots!

As for fishing, I jigged up two nice channel cats before finding the schools of stripers. I don't think I caught a striper larger than 12"...but it was sure nice finding them there in the summer. Now if they are consistent, hopefully we can find a good summer pattern which would be a real treat.

I thought you guys knew that the flats are party central on weekends. I hate going there on weekends to many drunkin go fast boaters. Mid week and you are almost alone out there

Congrats on the catches, I heard reports from locals that there were some catches of the striped ones. Wanted to get out Saturday AM but had a BD party that ruined that plan. If you cant get out on the flats early, try somewhere else.
