  • Potomac River/ Chain Bridge Shad

    Friends,
Yesterday I took off early from work, launched my Tarpon 14 from Fletcher's Boathouse In Upper NW DC and paddle about a mile north to just south of Chain bridge. The area is packed, I mean , Packed with American and Hickory Shad. I used a double shad dart set up, with a chartreuse at the top and a red and white following. I caught one hickory and 11 American Shad in less than 2 hours including my all time best a 4 pound American. I highly recommend this trip to anyone in the area.

It seems to me that shad are very fragile. What is the best way to transport them from the Potomac to the Bay?

All Shad fishing is catch and release in Maryland. As nice as it would be to use them for bait its illegal.

I fished from shore there yesterday and got into a couple Americans and a few of the biggest hickory shad I have ever seen. I think fishing should improve after this weekend.

Its been a while since I've been down to Fletcher's. Can you get through the tunnel with a SUV with roof mounted kayak or do you have to walk it down from the parking lot on the other side of the canal? I cant remember how high the tunnel is.

I tried for them on the susky today. I did get 1 hickory on Tuesday. susky striper.jpg Conditions were bad and getting worse but I caught my biggest striper in a while on my light rod with 6lb test.
