  • Small muskie on the Upper Potomac- 1/4

My brother and I went out on the Upper Potomac, near Williamsport, Saturday looking for walleye or smallies. We knew it would be cold but we wanted to test out some new gear that we got for Christmas. Air temperature was 27 degrees when we got there.

Fairly late in the day, I hooked into this small barred muskie- my first at 23.5".

I caught him working a finesse jig with a Gulp minnow along the bottom, VERY slowly. He was revived and released successfully to grow into the monster of someone's dreams.

For my part, I am actually pretty happy that my first muskie wasn't the fish of a lifetime, especially not having targeted them specifically. We didn't get any other bites all day, but our gear proved capable, and I caught my first fish of 2014. Its going to be a good year on the water.

    Nice fish.

What a good way to start the New Year.

You guys are tough to go out in this weather.

Nice ! Great start to the year ! No matter what size it is , it's always a great feeling when you catch your first species ,even if it's not the main target. A lot of my first time species was never really targeted . Congrats !

Thanks. Water was pretty muddy, as the level was pretty high. We were confined to the eddies where the current was navigable. I didn't get a water temp, but ice was forming off the tip of my rod and in the first few eyelets.
