  • Jamaica Bay Kayak Fishing Tournament 2011

Guys - Just wanted to give you all a heads up that the J-Bay tournament for this year is scheduled for May 12-15 in Jamaica Bay Brooklyn, NY at Floyd Bennett Field. It is one of the largest kayak events in the country and attracts over 300 anglers a year.

Target Species - Rock (fish in the 40'' range are not uncommon), Blues (We caught some around 30" if you measured to the tip of the tail), Weakfish (in year's past people got almost 40" weakies), and fluke (flounder to us).

It's a lot of fun and a great opportunity to meet some of the other Kayakers in our greater area.

As this falls under our M&G schedule I am nominating it as the venue and I will volunteer to coordinate. I'm planning on heading up Wednesday-Sunday and will fish hard everyday and some nights that I am there.

More information to come, just wanted to get it on your calendars now!

I'll second Michael's May 2011 M&G location nomination and him as volunteer ringleader! I'm circling this on the calendar. There's camping, right?

Agreed surfdog, we should make an appearance at the TKAA fall or spring tournament as well...

Here's my trip report from last year http://www.snaggedline.com/boatyard/showthread.php?t=249

There's camping for everyone and it's included in your entrance fee. There is also a captains bag that comes with some sweet stuff in it!

Yes there is camping a Floyd Bennett, there are no hook ups or water for campsites. But don't let that keep you away.

I held off for 6 years (I met JonS and kayakjoey, the founders of KFS and J-bay tourney, 10 years ago thru SOL and they kept pestering me to come up) on attending this one and finally went this past year. The fishery is unbelievable, especially with it being right in NYC.

Keep an eye on kayakfishingmagazine.net for info on this and other NE tourneys. They just start a child forum dedicated to J-Bay discussion with a lot of talk about ideas on how to make the tourney better.

I'm definitely going to be there along with 300 of my closest friends!

Now THAT is a plastic navy armada! Nice!

I'm late to this kayak fishing scene but am all in now after my first season of really getting out there. I have, of course heard about this and plan to attend. I grew up in NYC so it's home waters. In fact, the first saltwater fish I ever caught was in Jamaica Bay! Hopefully we get a good MKF turnout and can fly the flag prominently.

Regarding camping, my wife and I tent camp so no worries about hookups. Are there bathroom and shower facilities? Or is it strictly outhouses? The missus knows how to rough it but THAT might have an impact on her attendance.

Are there any hotels close to the event? I love to camp but i got rid of all my camping gear years ago. I will also need a place to work at night and a TV, shower, bed, snack machine, Pizza delivery, ABC store. I figure its a mini vacation for me so why not do it in style

John- It's definitely just outhouses... and I've heard in years past there were not very many of them. Last year a lot of the major forums solicited members to donate money to sponsor their own port-a-potties and then they decorated them. Some were really funny actually. The Casting for Recovery one was very cool.

My Girlfriend camped with us for a couple of the days but it was definitely rough... She's more prepared this year!

Here's a link to the information they sent out last year for the tournament, it includes information about the event as well as local hotels and B&Ts.

I'm hoping we can get a group together to make the trip!

Yes there are, Sheepshead Bay has a couple. My buddy Mike stayed in a Comfort Inn, I think. I'll say this much, he's staying at the launch site next year. Too much fun to miss out on along with some great night fishing....but that's OK, you go stay in a cushy hotel, we'll catch yur feesh!

                          Reviving this thread

With the possibility of J-Bay being the May 2011 M&G I thought I would revive this thread to gauge interest.

                          Here are some useful links:

My report from last year is linked earlier in this thread if you care to read up.

I'm planning on driving up Wednesday-Sunday this year if I can swing it from work and fish as much as possible. My real goal is to catch a nice sized weakfish, it would be a first for me since they are non-existent in the areas I fish.

If you have any questions let me know!

I will defintily be there assuming I can get off of work. If not, i'll have to drive up friday evening and fish that saturday fueled by redbull and coffee alone. I would love to be able to get up there weds and do some prefishing to get a lay of the land. Either way i will be fishing atleast the day of the actual tourney. Sounds like a blast.
