  • OBX redfish report 7/13-7/16

So this is my second year of trying the banks during the summertime.(as opposed to the yearly fall trip) Last year the redfish were just thick all over the flats near Oregon inlet. This year (at first) a different story. Our first day a stiff S/SW wind had the flats churned up and murky, hardly worth going out. Day two thunderstorms came through but the wind started to turn from the north. We gave it a shot in the late afternoon trying a spot that has been good in the past. Only found one fish that would cooperate. Fortunately for me it was a PB coming in at just over 30.

Mental note: make sure camera isn't pointing toward sun

Today we found improving conditions with wind from the N/NE and much clearer water. Got on the fish right away and spent most of the day chasing reds-which were chasing baitfish on the flats.

The best fishing seemed to be on the upper end of the falling tide. My sense is that the redfish migrate up onto the flats on the upper incoming and then migrate back out. Most of the fish we picked off were found by carefully scanning the surface for swirls, fleeing baitfish or giant explosions like the huge school we encountered mid day.

Paddletail ZMan lures were the go-to lure in natural colors. We ended up with only 5 fish today, which by last year's standards would be a slow day. I'll take it...Man those fish put up a ridiculous fight.

Great job! Those are some nice fish. Are you using 1/2oz or lighter?

Those are strike king redfish magic jig heads in 1/4, I think.. You don't want too heavy or you get hung in the grass. The areas the fish were in is in the 2-4ft range, often even less.

I think Strike King and Zman are in business together. The "redfish magic" spinners come with Zman tails, but it doesn't mention it on the package.

Here's a little video clip of one of the Reds from the other day. We were doubled up at one point but hers came off (we're still working on setting the hook)
My apologies for the poor sound quality
